Man, created by God from the dust of the ground, is mortal and subject to death, which is the divine penalty for sin. In death man has no existence and is completely unconscious.

The LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. - Genesis 2:7

In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust and to dust you shall return. - Genesis 3:19

Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, so death spread to all men because all men sinned. - Romans 5:12

In death there is no remembrance of thee, in Sheol (the grave) who can give thee praise? - Psalm 6:5

When thou hidest thy face, they are dismayed; when thou takest away their breath, they die and return to their dust. - Psalm 104:29

Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no help. When his breath departs, he returns to his earth. On that very day his thoughts perish. - Psalm 146:3-4

The living know that they shall die, but the dead know nothing ... Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished ... Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol (the grave) to which you are going. - Ecclesiastes 9:5-10
